Las Vegas sits inside an hour of red rock canyons, a national park's worth of sandstone, and a reservoir. Almost nobody who visits ever leaves the corridor.
Twenty minutes away
Red Rock Canyon — a 13-mile scenic loop with pull-offs, hiking trails and world-class sandstone climbing.
Timed-entry reservations have applied to the scenic drive in peak season — check the current requirement before driving out. Going early avoids both that window and the heat.
Calico Tanks and Ice Box Canyon are the accessible hikes.
An hour away
Valley of Fire State Park — red Aztec sandstone formations, petroglyphs, and the Fire Wave, a striped rock formation that looks synthetic.
Nevada's oldest state park, considerably quieter than Red Rock, and the drive in is part of it.
The Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, 45 minutes — the dam tour goes inside the structure, and the bypass bridge above gives the view.
Mount Charleston, 45 minutes — at 3,600 metres, roughly 20°C cooler than the valley, with pine forest and hiking. In summer this is the escape.

Zion is the best of these and uses a shuttle system in the canyon for most of the year.
Death Valley is viable October to April and dangerous in summer.
Downtown
A different city from the Strip.
Fremont Street — the older casino district under a covered LED canopy, with lower table minimums and cheaper drinks.
Fremont East and the Arts District — independent bars, restaurants and galleries with nothing to do with the resort corridor.
The Neon Museum — a boneyard of retired casino signs, best on an evening tour when some are lit.
What the Strip does well
Shows. The resident production quality is genuinely high, and same-day discount booths sell remaining tickets.
Food. Chefs with global reputations run outposts here, and the buffets are a separate institution.
Free spectacle — the Bellagio fountains, the conservatory, the hotel interiors. Walking the Strip once at night costs nothing.
The Strip is longer than it looks. Adjacent casinos are frequently a fifteen-minute walk apart.
Practical
Rent a car if you intend to leave the corridor. Everything above needs one.
July and August exceed 40°C, and outdoor activity in the middle of the day becomes genuinely dangerous. Spring and autumn are the seasons.
Resort fees are added to most hotel bills separately from the room rate — factor them in when comparing prices.
Carry far more water than feels necessary on any desert hike.
